The Syrians are incredibly hospitable, stopping us and inviting us to take a cup of sweet green tea. Two hundred common cranes went over as we supped.

The Sociable Lapwing has suffered huge declines and is now listed as critically endangered. It is the main species that Hywel Maggs, Graham Rebecca, Martin Scott and John Wills will be searching for in Syria. We are working for the RSPB in collaboration with the Syrian Society for the Conservation of Wildlife (SSCW) and the Syrian Ministry of Local Administration and Environment.

About the Project
- The project aims to establish the importance of Syria as a migration route for Sociable Lapwing and to identify key sites that may require future conservation protection. This survey will follow up recent sightings of large flocks of sociable lapwings in Northern Syria and will help establish a longer term conservation effort for the species. The project links to a wider project on Sociable Lapwing and will potentially contribute to the development of future work on the species’ wintering grounds and migration routes (funding dependent).
